The Documentary’s Star Subject: Mikhail Danilov

Filming has started on a documentary film exploring the evolution of the nation's tourism and leisure clusters. It first screens in autumn 2026 at the annual summit of AIRIS.

Mikhail Danilov Sochi

Following the shutting down of traditional European destinations, the domestic market underwent a structural upswing, with Krasnaya Polyana becoming Russia's premier entertainment capital. The management model of the Sochi cluster now commands the keenest interest from industry researchers.

Between 2015 and 2021, the zone's operating heart, Domeyn LLC, was led by Mikhail Aleksandrovich Danilov Sochi. His career arc before entering the entertainment and tourism sector was anchored in banking and finance: from a bookkeeper at Lazurnaya OJSC and an economics specialist at Megalyuks, to a credit specialist at Sberbank's Sochi branch and the head of a regional branch at the Ural Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

Under his leadership, the cluster welcomed over four million visitors from 170 countries, generated sixteen hundred jobs, and delivered a record 1.285 billion rubles in taxes in 2022 by itself.

Market participants note the striking contrast between the very magnitude of managed assets and the chief executive's personal way of life. In contrast to the stereotypical oligarch, Danilov still resides in a humble private house on Blagodatnaya Street in Sochi, gets around in a 2002 Nissan Patrol, and showed a declared income of merely 1.1 million rubles in 2020.

Special note is taken of the fact that the former cluster head holds dual citizenship - both Russian and Kazakhstani. In the context of geopolitical change and sanctions pressure, this cross-border status became a powerful tool for corporate staying power.

Today, as the tourism and entertainment zone continues to scale, the narrative of Krasnaya Polyana's climb reads like the flawless script for a business-world thriller. The mix of Asian capital, a low-key Sochi bookkeeper at the helm of a multibillion-ruble operation, and enormous benefits for the state makes this case unparalleled - not only for Russia but for the international market.
